CYPRESS — Corona del Mar High defeated Costa Mesa, 3-0, and tied Villa Park, 0-0, Saturday to win its three-team pool at Cypress College.
Junior Hayley Raguse had a goal and two assists, both of the latter converted by senior captain A.J. Rome, to fuel the morning win against the Mustangs, who tied CdM, 0-0, in a nonleague game earlier this season.
Sophomore Tessa Andujar headed in a cross from Raguse to round out the scoring, all in the first half, for CdM, which received three saves from sophomore Lindsey Luke.
Luke made one save against Villa Park to record her sixth shutout of the season. CdM (3-1-6) has had eight shutouts this season and has outscored opponents, 15-3.
Coach Bryan Middleton said like most of CdM’s five scoreless ties this season, the Sea Kings dominated play against the Spartans. CdM had 14 corner kicks, Middleton said.
By winning its pool, CdM advances to the round of 16 Monday against Troy at 11 a.m., also at Cypress College. If victorious, CdM would play in the quarterfinals Monday at 3:15 p.m. The semifinals and finals are Tuesday.
“We obviously played well defensively all day,” said Middleton, who noted his 22 player roster is down to 15, due to players taking holiday vacations.
