Girls’ holiday hoops action gets underway Friday in full force with the Larry Doyle Orange County Championships, affording local fans the chance to see some exciting action.

The 16-team tournament is a four-day event and the first two days of action will take place at Marina High and the final two at Edison.

Following Friday’s opening-round action, the tournament continues Saturday and Monday, and concludes Tuesday, leading up to an 8 p.m. championship game.

Both Marina and Edison play first-round games Friday.

Marina tips off a 10:30 a.m. against Mira Costa, while Edison goes up against Dana Hills at 3:30 p.m.

Tournament play begins at 9 a.m. all four days and runs daily until 9:30 p.m.

“Talent-wise, this tournament runs the spectrum,” Marina Coach Butch Fredlow said. “You have four top 10 teams in the county (Edison, Foothill, Santa Margarita, Villa Park), a tough Mira Costa team that played for a State title last year and some middle-of-the road teams that play hard, like us. It’s one of the top girls’ tournaments around. The best part is that it bears the name of Larry Doyle, who was just a major advocate of girls’ athletics in general.”

Doyle, former Marina boys’ and girls’ athletic director who simultaneously held down several chores at Vikings basketball games — game announcer, timer and statistician — died of cancer in the spring of 1999.

Edison is the defending tournament champion. In last year’s final, the Chargers defeated Mira Costa. Foothill claimed third place, Santa Margarita was fifth and ML King defeated Marina in the consolation championship game.
