A jolly jog together

While families everywhere were gathered around the Christmas tree Thursday morning unwrapping presents, they were having their own little get together. At the beach.

Though Christmas morning may be a day for rest and relaxation for some, for a group of eight adventurous people, Thursday morning was the perfect day to get together for a morning run.

“We decided we were all going to be here for Christmas, so we decided to do something to pull us all together,” said Micky Bazydlo, 31.

Bazydlo and his friends, who came to Newport Beach’s coast Thursday from as far away as Syracuse, N.Y.; New York City; and Big Bear, are all united by their love of the outdoors.

They figured that since they’d all be in the area during the holidays, why not meet up and do what they love with a little holiday twist?

“Every Christmas we go out, it doesn’t matter where we are,” Bazydlo said.

Bazydlo is originally from Syracuse as well, but moved to Costa Mesa five years ago.

The Southern California weather was suitable for their 5-K run with Christmas caps, he said. The eight know each other through rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking trips around the world.

“When we started at 9 a.m., it was a little overcast. But when we finished afterward, people were starting to creep in. We got a few kinds of laugh and comments,” Bazydlo said.

Even Bazydlo’s dog Cody joined in the run, donning a fitted Christmas cap.
