It’s the perfect time to make a New Year’s resolution “to learn something new in 2009!”
The Newport Beach Public Library makes it easy to keep that resolution all year long with basic computer classes and other special programs.
On Jan. 27, the library will roll out a new schedule of “Tuesday @ Two” classes covering a variety of topics. These classes will take place at the Newport Beach Central Library at 2 p.m. on the dates listed below.
Space is limited, so be sure to call the library in advance at (949) 717-3860 to sign up.
Basic Introduction to the Web (Jan. 27): This class will cover the general concepts of the world wide web. The goal of this class is to teach the basics of the Internet in efforts to help beginners become more comfortable with basic Internet searching.
Buying on eBay (Feb. 3): eBay is your one-stop shop for online bidding. Find items, bid on them, and have them sent directly to your doorstep. This class will provide a brief overview on how to set up an account, and bid on or purchase items.
Selling on eBay (Feb. 10): Take your eBay experience one step beyond buying, and make a profit on something you no longer want or need by selling it online. This class explores the process of listing an item for sale on the popular online bidding website.
Introduction to e-mail (Feb. 24): This class will allow you to become familiar with sending and receiving e-mail. During this session, you will be able to sign up for a free e-mail account, learn how to compose e-mails, and explore the ins and outs of this popular method of communication.
Advanced Google Searching (March 3): If you are familiar with basic Google searching and would like to explore the Internet in more depth, this is the class for you. Learn advanced search techniques that will allow you to get more accurate and relevant results with every search you perform.
Shopping for a computer (March 10): This class will help you understand the basics of what to look for when purchasing a computer for your own personal use, where to locate reviews of different brands, and how to keep current about the latest technologies.
Résumé writing using Microsoft Word (March 17): Learn résumé-writing basics utilizing Microsoft Word, explore already made templates, and discuss aspects of résumé writing that will impress prospective employers in this Tuesday session.
People and business searching with Reference USA (March 24): In this class, learn how to perform business or residential searches using the library database Reference USA.
Job searching online (March 31): Seeking employment? This session will help you become familiar with the online resources available for job searching.
Consumer information online (April 14): This class will help you learn the resources available online to help find product information such as consumer reviews and product reliability statistics.
Digital camera and photography basics (April 21): A beginner class on understanding digital photography, and how to upload pictures from a camera to the computer.
Online scrapbooking (April 28): In this class, learn how to get creative with digital pictures online and create scrapbooks to share with family or friends.
ProQuest search for newspaper and magazine articles (May 12): During this session, you will get the chance to explore one of the most popular library research databases, and learn how to search for magazine or newspaper articles on any topic.
Overdrive audio books (June 16): Learn how to use the library’s free audio book service, download books onto MP3 players, and more.
