Three ink future with UCI men’s volleyball program
Scott Kevorken, a 6-foot-9 senior at Westlake High who helped the U.S. youth national team win a gold medal at the NORCEDA Youth Continental Championships in August, leads a list of three recruits who have signed national letters of intent to play men’s volleyball at UC Irvine, Anteaters Coach John Speraw said.
Kevorken, a middle blocker, was a team MVP last season, when he earned first-team All-Marmonte League, second-team All-Ventura County and third-team All-CIF Southern Section laurels. Connor Hughes, a Costa Mesa resident attending Mater Dei High, is a 6-7 outside hitter who was named Trinity League Co-Most Valuable Player last season. He also plays basketball at Mater Dei and was a member of the Monarchs’ state championship squad last season.
Hughes helped the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club’s Quiksilver 16 team win the 16-and-under open division at the 2006 Junior Olympics in Minneapolis. Ian Castellana is a 6-6 middle blocker attending San Clemente High, where he was a first-team All-South Coast League honoree last spring. He helped the Tritons win the league title.
