A 20-year-old man was killed Saturday at Goldenwest Street and Edinger Avenue, when his car caught fire after it was hit by a man who police believe was intoxicated.

The victim, Jose R. Pacheco of Duarte, was stopped at a red light when a white Honda Accord heading north on Goldenwest crashed into his red Ford Mustang about 1:40 a.m.

The Honda Accord, driven by Kenneth John McNair, 21, of La Mirada, failed to stop for the stopped traffic, according to police.

“The Mustang caught fire and was fully engulfed as a result of the collision. No one was able to rescue the driver,” police said in a news release stated.

McNair then sideswiped a Plymouth Neon driven by Cherie Shelok, 48, of Costa Mesa, then struck a tractor trailer driven by Michael Delp, 27, of Fontana. Those drivers were not injured, police said.

Pacheco was pronounced dead at 1:42 a.m. He was a student at Cal State Long Beach, according to the university website.

McNair was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter. He suffered minor bruises, and refused medical treatment.

The cause of the collision is under investigation. Witnesses are asked to contact the Huntington Beach Police Department Traffic Bureau at (714) 536-5670.
