Edison hammers Marina, 55-14

When Marina and Edison met up Thursday night at Orange Coast College in Sunset League football action, both teams came into the game coming off stinging losses.

Edison suffered its first defeat in a four-point road loss to Los Alamitos, while Marina saw its shot at getting that first league win slip away in overtime against Esperanza.

There was no suspense, however, in Thursday’s meeting.

Behind an offense working on a cylinders and a defense that didn’t yield a point until the second half, Edison rolled to a 55-14 victory for its ninth straight win in the series between the Huntington Beach schools.

Edison ran just 44 plays in the game, but they went for a whopping 589 yards.

The Chargers had 311 yards passing and 278 more on the ground and they were without two key offensive threats: receiver Jeff Crissman and running back Preston Spence, both sidelined with injuries.

“I think we had one of the all-time highs in that regard,” Edison Coach Dave White said of the offensive output in a minimal effort. “That probably is the most yards per play our program has ever had. It was great, too, in that everyone got to play.

“There were a lot of good things happening, obviously, and it was nice to rebound from that tough loss to Los Al.”

The Chargers, who are now 2-1 in league and 6-2 overall, led 35-0 at the half and 42-0 before Marina scored on a 13-yard pass from Zach Couey to Jarrid Balis midway through the third quarter.

Edison quarterback Matt Viles completed 13 of 17 passes for 261 yards. His back-up, Stephen Andrew, had one completion but it went for 50 yards and a touchdown late in the third quarter to Michael Rivera.

Rivera had three TD receptions overall and had six catches total 177 yards. The Chargers’ rushing attack saw Davion Orphey gain 119 yards and score three touchdowns on 11 carries and Wade Houston run for 109 yards and a pair of scores on just nine carries.

Marina’s Nick Dallas scored on a 31-yard run in the fourth quarter for the game’s final score.

Next week, Edison squares off against archrival Fountain Valley in the annual Battle for the Bell on Nov. 7 at Orange Coast College. Marina, meanwhile, plays at Newport Harbor next Friday.

Huntington Beach 44, Northwood 17: The Oilers overcame a sloppy first half to blitz the Timberwolves in the second half of this Sea View League game at Newport Harbor High Thursday.

Missed assignments and three turnovers, one of which led to Northwood’s first touchdown, led to Huntington facing a 10-3 deficit at the half. But a big second half performance allowed the Oilers to pick up their first league win of the season and snap a three-game losing streak in the process.

“We played so sloppy in that first half and that killed us,” Huntington Coach Eric Lo said. “We missed assignments and those three turnovers really held us back.

“The key in the second half was that we came out with increased energy and executed on offense, and we ended up with a big win.”

Huntington erupted for 27 points in the third quarter to establish control. Senior running back Logan Emery kick-started the comeback with a 74-yard scoring run. Later in the quarter, he took in a 40-yard touchdown pass from Sean Guite, who threw four touchdown passes over a span of the middle of the third quarter to the beginning of the fourth quarter, as the OIilers took a 30-10 lead.

Guite, who threw for 278 yards, first tossed a 19-yard scoring strike to Kaller Roemer. After teaming up with Emery, he threw a one-yard TD pass to Roemer and then a 74-yard pass to Dylan Simmons.

Simmons finished the scoring for Huntington with a 74-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that upped the Oilers’ advantage to 44-10.

Huntington improved to 1-2 in league and 3-5 overall. The Oilers next play El Toro on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. at Laguna Hills High.

Northwood fell to 0-3 in league and 2-6 overall.

“Those two big scoring plays by Logan Emery really seemed to get us fired up,” Lo said. “After losing three straight games, it’s great to get a win. It’s good for our morale and now puts us in position to get a playoff berth. Our next two games against El Toro and Woodbridge will be big for us.”
