The Golden West League girls’ golf tournament had plenty riding on its two-day outcome: the league’s No. 1 seed, players moving on to the Round of 12, the crowning of a new individual league champion and finding out which the top three individuals would earn a berth to next week’s CIF individual regional tournament.

The top 12 players from Monday’s league prelims tournament on the 18-hole (par 35) course at Mesa Linda Golf Course in Costa Mesa advanced to Tuesday’s finals. In addition, Laguna Beach and Estancia, co-champs during the regular season, played a tie-breaker match over the first nine holes to determine the league’s first- and second-place representatives for the CIF team playoffs that begin Nov. 10.

Estancia won the tie-breaker, 219-230, on its home course and will go into the CIF team playoffs as the No. 1 team from the league.

Despite the loss, the Breakers knocked 34 strokes off their previous score against Estancia on the same Mesa Linda course last week. The Eagles also won that Oct. 20 match, but Laguna had defeated Estancia in the first meeting between the teams back on Oct. 1 in San Clemente.

“Obviously, the girls were disappointed we lost by 11 strokes, but they were proud, as was I, of how much better they played versus our last match on Oct. 20,” Laguna Coach Val Quigley said. “Almost every player scored better on the back nine than the front nine and the girls wanted those scores to count instead of just counting the front nine.

Individually on Tuesday, Laguna junior Grace Komoroczy became the 2008 Golden West League champion and was one of two Breakers “” senior Karina Shaw was the other “” to earn a berth in next week’s CIF individual regional tournament.

Tuesday’s finals, played in 100-degree heat in Chino, was an 18 holes competition on the Butterfield Stage course at El Prado Golf Course. Komoroczy was low scorer with a 77 and won the tournament with a two-day total score of 152. Shaw, despite being hampered by tendinitis in the area of her right elbow, still shot a final round 85 for a two-day total of 163, good for third-place and a repeat first team all-league standing. Last year, Shaw won the Golden West League individual title and went on to reach the Southern California Regional finals.

The CIF Southern Division individual regional tournament starts at 8 a.m. Monday at the Yucaipa Golf Course and the regional finals begin at 8 a.m. Thursday at Mountain Meadows Golf Course in Pomona.

? Girls’ Volleyball

Laguna completed an Orange Coast League sweep of Godinez on Oct. 23 with a 25-5, 25-7, 25-7 victory at Godinez. The Breakers improved to 5-0 in league and 18-8 overall. Laguna ends its regular season next week. The Breakers play Monday at Estancia and host Costa Mesa Wednesday in a league finale for both teams. They also will have their alumni match Nov. 7.

? Cross-Country

Laguna was scheduled to compete last weekend at the Mt. SAC Invitational, but bus problems prevented the Breakers from making the trip to Walnut, girls’ coach Steve Lalim said.

Laguna will compete at the Orange Coast League finals Thursday at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa.
