CdM bolsters lineup with two Mater Dei transfers
The Corona del Mar High boys’ basketball team will have two new faces, Mater Dei transfers Keegan Jakosky and Daniel Cheek, Sea Kings Coach Ryan Schachter said Saturday.
Schachter expects the 5-foot-11 Jakosky, a sophomore, to start at point guard and the 6-2 Cheek, a sophomore, at wing.
“They both live in the area and they figured just being at Mater Dei they might not get the opportunity to play,” said Schachter, adding that Jakosky started on Mater Dei’s freshman A team and Cheek played junior varsity last season. “We’re happy to have them.”
The Sea Kings lost a lot of talent from last season’s team finishing 21-8, 8-0 in the Pacific Coast League, and advancing to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division III-A playoffs.
Point guard Clayton Ragsdale moved and transferred to Brea Olinda after being a part-time starter his freshman year.
Stefan Kaluz, a 6-foot-9 center, graduated and is now at Brown University after earning first-team All-Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Assn. Division III-A honors. Kaluz averaged 17.7 points, 11 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game.
Joe Eberhard, a 6-6 small forward, is at UC Irvine after getting second-team recognition. Eberhard averaged 15.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
“Only three players return from last year,” said Schachter, who’s entering his third year at CdM, the first one he led the program to a section crown. “These two new guys will definitely help us.”
