EDITORIAL: Cheers for the high school
Public education has a long history in Laguna Beach, predating the establishment of the city of Laguna Beach by nearly 50 years.
The school district was established in 1879, with an enrollment of 19 and an average daily attendance of 11 students, according to district historians. Back then, the district’s property was valued at $20 and its annual budget was $550.
The city of Laguna Beach wasn’t incorporated until 1927.
In 1928, the nucleus of the high school was built “” 10 classrooms that housed all grades.
This year, Laguna Beach High School celebrates its 75th year. The school was built in 1935, but dates its beginnings from 1933, when the high school district was formed.
The district is justifiably proud of all its campuses, but the high school, with its well-kept grounds and historic buildings, is the jewel in the crown.
The school not only has an ocean view, but a beautiful, historic theater, built in 1931 by the WPA.
This is a real banner year for the school, which was just named a national Blue Ribbon School in recognition of its academic excellence.
There is much to be proud of.
Laguna Beach High School has an enviable record of achievement, traditionally sending nearly all its graduates to college.
The community’s support for the senior class is outstanding, with more than $100,000 in scholarships given to graduates every year “” nearly every student getting some monetary reward for years of hard work.
A big “homecoming” is planned today in conjunction with the Breakers’ big home football game. Many alumni will return for a barbecue and some former cheerleaders from bygone days will even get on the field to help cheer the team during half-time.
We would like to add our cheers to those of the current and former students, faculty, staff, and community for 75 years of excellence “” and many more.
