CORONA DEL MAR — Brian Schiefer scored three goals to lead the Corona del Mar High boys’ water polo team to an 11-10 win in a nonleague match of ranked teams Friday at Corona del Mar.

The Sea Kings (1-1), ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Division I preseason coaches poll, held off Foothill, ranked No 5 in CIF Division I, in the fourth quarter when the Knights outscored CdM, 4-2.

The Sea Kings had two starters on the bench because both had three fouls each. But CdM held on to win. Carter Taylor and Lucas Reynolds added two goals each for the Sea Kings, while goalie Isle Anderson recorded 15 saves.

Corona del Mar opened the season with a 12-8 loss at No. 4-ranked Harvard Westlake Wednesday, when Max Bergeson led the Sea Kings with five goals.

NEWPORT BEACH — Katie Thompson and Mary Buckhingham helped lead Newport Harbor to two wins to open pool play in Division I Friday at Newport Harbor.

Thompson had six kills in the Sailors’ 25-22, 25-21 win over Peninsula. Jennifer Palmquist added five kills, while Kirby Burnham and Buckingham had four each. Buckingham also had six digs and Kelly Heenan had eight digs. Arielle Lysacek contributed 20 assists and three aces.

Buckingham led Harbor with eight kills in its 25-18, 25-14 win over Canyon.

Burnham had six kills and Maddie Brown four. Katie Lawler chipped in four aces and three digs. Lysacek had 10 assists and three aces in the Sailors’ win.

Newport Harbor plays at home today against San Clemente at 9 a.m. to close out pool play. If the Sailors win they advance to the 16-team playoff at Huntington Beach. The final is Monday.

CORONA DEL MAR — Conley Kipp and Madie Smith helped Corona del Mar to two victories in pool play of Division I Friday at Corona del Mar.

The Sea Kings opened with a 25-12, 16-25, 15-11 victory over Valencia.

Then, Kipp had 11 kills to lead CdM to a 25-16, 25-14 win over Esperanza. Smith added 22 assists.

CdM closes out pool play today at 9 a.m. against Carlsbad and will later try to meet up with Newport Harbor at Huntington Beach.
