Evan Hirsch, a 2004 graduate of Corona del Mar High School, is off this month for a year of study at the University of Glasgow, in Scotland, thanks to a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarship.

Hirsch is being sponsored by the Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa, according to club President Victor Currie.

When Hirsch was 14, he participated in the Rotary Club’s summer Youth Exchange program with a sister club in Okasaki, Japan.

He said, “I think one of the reasons that I was so successful in high school is because I garnered so much self-confidence while living in Japan.”

Hirsch graduated from Claremont McKenna College with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, politics and economics in June.

In addition to studying in Scotland, Hirsch will be hosted by Rotary clubs around the country and will participate in Scottish family life as he serves as a Rotary ambassador from the United States to Scotland.

His career goal is to work on international issues either with the United Nationals or a non-governmental organization.

Since 1947, Rotary’s Ambassadorial Scholarships has afforded nearly 38,000 men and women from about 100 nations the ability to study.

The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas.

For more information on the Ambassadorial Scholarships for the 2010-11 academic year, contact Rotarian Richard Holmgren at (949) 644-8244.

EXCHANGE CLUB BOOKS MOVIE

The blockbuster movie of all time for our movie benefit this year: The new James Bond.

“Quantum of Solstice” will be shown Nov. 13 at the Lido Theater (that’s one day before the first showing to the public, according to Bob Washer, the Newport Harbor Exchange Club member who arranges for the movies).

“This is the 17th year that we’ve combined a movie screening with food tasting from area restaurants into a really great fundraiser for our club,” he adds.

Details on ticket prices will be shared in the coming weeks.

WORTH REPEATING

Thought for the Day as provided by Greg Kelley of the Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council: “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.”
