IRVINE — Anteaters junior forward Amanda Phillips scored in the 87th minute on freshman Stevie Mersola’s cross, lifting UCI to the nonconference home win Friday.
Senior keeper Erin Henry had five saves for UCI (1-1), picking up her third career shutout. She now has 134 career saves, ninth all-time at UCI.
UCI senior Rachel Flemming had the best scoring opportunity in the first half, but her shot from 30 yards out went off the crossbar.
UCI will play at No. 24-ranked San Diego Sunday at 6 p.m.

COSTA MESA — Vanguard won two matches Friday at Vanguard, concluding the day by topping No. 12-ranked Southern Oregon, 30-28, 25-19, 25-15.
In earlier action, the No. 21-ranked Lions (2-0) swept Westminster (Utah), 25-13, 25-14, 25-21 in the head-coaching debut of Marissa Cothran, a Newport Harbor High and Vanguard product.
Junior outside hitter Kelsey Wirt had a team-high 11 kills against Southern Oregon, Heather DeJongh added eight and Jessica Roy had seven. Alexandra Griffiths had a team-high 12 digs.
Wirt also had a team-high 11 kills against Westminster and added two block assists, while middle blockers Roy and Shardai Sublett had seven kills each. Junior setter Meghan Walsh dished out 31 assists and also tied for a team high with nine digs.
Vanguard continues the tournament today against Great Falls (Mont.) at 11 a.m. and Montana Tech at 3 p.m.
