Presbyterians hold Vacation Bible school
Laguna Presbyterian Church wrapped up its Vacation Bible School last week with skits, science experiments, games, songs and “Funologists.” This year’s theme spawned several experiments, including dry ice with a thin film of soap over the top causing the ice to bubble up, to demonstrate “how God’s love powerfully bubbles over us all.”
The school was filled shortly after enrollment opened last spring. Many volunteers from the congregation worked behind the scenes, led activity stations and acted in skits, assisting Family Life Pastor Steve Sweet, Worship Leader Beth Pinney, and Christian Education Leaders Lisa Wilhelm, Maggie Craig and Gail Onodera.
Marine Mammal Center book signing
The Pacific Marine Mammal Center will host a book signing by the photographer and author of the “Comeback Kids Books,” at 2 p.m. Aug. 17.
The books combine the poetry of Penelope Dyan and the photographs of John D. Weigand. There are seven books in the series, which began with “The Northern Elephant Seals,” and most recently added “The American Alligator.”
“The series is billed as a book series for kids that looks good on your coffee table,” Weigand said. The center is at 20612 Laguna Canyon Road. The books can be purchased at www.bellissimapublishing.com.
School has new curriculum like Aleph Champ
Chabad Jewish Center Hebrew invites students ages 5 to 13 who attend local public schools to come to Chabad each Tuesday afternoon to explore their Jewish heritage.
“A new and creative learning environment replaces the traditional Hebrew School setting,” Rabbi Goorevitch said. “The atmosphere is upbeat, fun, and inspiring, so that our students like being with us.”
This fall, Chabad Hebrew School will use the nationally acclaimed Aleph Champion Program. Modeled after the Karate/Martial Arts motivational philosophy of color-coded levels and testing, Aleph Champ has been implemented in Hebrew Schools worldwide.
