Dr. James Clifford Doyle 1923-2008

Dr. James C. Doyle, former Chief of Staff, Hoag Hospital. Initiated concept and organized the Coronary

Care, Cardiac and Intensive Care units which served as a prototype for multiple hospitals in California

and other states.

Dr. Doyle passed away July 10th at Hoag Hospital. He was 84 years old. A fi ghter who wouldn’t give up

– he endured Prostate cancer, Parkinson’s Disease, congestive heart failure (2 heart attacks), numerous

factures, diverticulosis and dialysis (Renal kidney failure for 10 years) at Newport dialysis and St. Joseph

dialysis and home dialysis the last 4 years. He joined the Hoag staff in August 1955, and served on the

panel with 30 physicians in interpreting electrocardiograms for 14 years.

Of historical interest along with his associate David Nielsen, M.D., they performed an electrocardiogram

on the fi rst whale consigned to a pool at Marine Land, Palos Verdes, Calif. This was previously

accomplished on the East Coast by Paul Dudley White, M.D., Cardiologist for President Eisenhower.

Doyle formed a committee comprised of the following physicians: Harry Stickler, Charles Turner, Charles

Stilgenbauer and David Ballentine.

These physicians visited four other Intensive Care units in Southern California and worked closely with

the excellent architects and nurses to design the unit.

Dr. Doyle developed the training program in Cardio–Pulmonary resuscitation for Hoag physicians, nurses

and for training Newport police as paramedics.

Doyle initiated the intravenous nurse program at Hoag. He proposed having physician members of the

hospital Lay Board approved by the medical staff and administrator Lay Board of directors. He was one of

the fi rst two physicians elected by the medical staff to serve on the board of directors.

Chairman, Coronary and Intensive Care Units for many years, Hoag Hospital, he lectured to physician

groups, nursing personnel, lay groups on cardio-pulmonary resuscitative measures, management of the

critically ill patient, cardiogenic shock, etc.

He also served on a panel with three other physicians for 14 years in reading and interpreting

electrocardiograms for the entire medical staff. He was a member of the Hoag Presbyterian Hospital

Speakers Bureau, available for health education to the public and professions.

Awarded commendation and letter of citation by Base Commanding Offi cer, General Lacey, for service beyond call of duty – was the only physician available at time of

bomber crash (with explosion) into base stockade occupied by multiple prisoners. Present onsite of holocaust to evacuate burned prisoners, then organized and established

emergency facility for care of 50-100 injured.

Jim enjoyed tennis, travel and Jazz piano, which he played during medical school.

A great father, he loved his family with all his heart. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Nancy Lou Peterson Doyle, who mentioned one of his friends had written that

“J.C.” (as he was known in Kentucky and also by “Jay”) that he was so full of life, so much fun to be with and had the best since of humor of anyone I know. She said that

was certainly true between the two of them. She felt so blessed to have been his wife. “I will miss him terribly.”

He is also survived by their daughter Tiffany Doyle Metcalf, her husband Johnny Metcalf and grandson Max (all of California); sister Marjorie Price; nieces Donabeth

Doyle, Judy Stout, and husband Charlie Stout; grand niece Allison and grand nephew Rich; nephew Jim Price Jr. and wife Lynn Price; numerous grand nieces and

nephews; and all of the state of Kentucky.

Service: Sunday, July 27 at 2:30 p.m., Pacifi c View Mortuary. In lieu of fl owers, donations may be made to Guide Dogs for the Blind, Pal
