I would like to respond to the article, “Newport police leave due to morale issues” which was written by Barbara Venezia and printed on April 19. I am disappointed that Barbara didn’t take the time to research the issue and report on both sides of the story. She obtained a very limited amount of information from a few disgruntled employees and reported it to the general public portraying it as if the overall majority of the police department employees are not happy. On the contrary, the majority of employees are happy but would like to see some improvements. All organizations have problems whether perceived or real that need to be addressed.

Can we do things better? Absolutely, and we are trying to implement positive change that will continue our progressive philosophy. Are we having trouble recruiting new recruits and lateral applicants? Absolutely not; our recruiting numbers are up and we are maintaining our high standards of excellence.

Shame on Barbara Venezia and shame on the employee who attempted to use her media access as a platform for his own benefit. I am also upset with the various comments on the blogger. Rumor has it that “Longboarder” is lucky to still be employed and actually owes a debt of gratitude to the organization for supporting him. In return, he acts like a scorned individual who cannot heal from his previous relationship with the organization.

I for one will stand by the organization and all of my brother and sister employees and do my part to help create positive change and move forward. Remember, conflict can be positive if done in a constructive manner. In closing, I would like to thank the community for their support and generosity.
