Costa Mesa, Estancia clash in track and field
The Estancia High and Costa Mesa track and field teams will meet today for a dual meet to determine the top dog in the cross-town rivalry.
Junior sprinter Antwon Byrd should be on hand to give a kick in the 100 meters and the relay team. Byrd is looking to improve on his personal best time of 10.85 seconds in the 100 meters, which currently puts him third on the all-time list at Costa Mesa.
Costa Mesa’s depth was a contributing factor in the team’s wins last season. This year, the Mustangs’ have some young talent that could break through. Hunter Strodel is one of the leading freshmen on the girls’ team in the 1,600 meters.
Jennifer Thomas should be a big contributor for the Eagles.
Last season both the Mustangs’ girls’ and boys’ teams won, with the most competitive event coming in the boys’ 1,600-meter relay. The Mustangs no longer have Asa Hawks, while the Eagles have lost standout Ryan Whites.
Senior Cody De La Mater will be a factor in the discus throw and shot put for the Mustangs. He won both events last season. Teagan Labare should also be a key contributor for the Costa Mesa girls.
Costa Mesa’s Tatiana Williams is eight inches away from the school record in the triple jump with a jump of 34-6.
Godinez will be at the meet as well, but will not be fielding a varsity team.
