YOUTH SCENE:
The Corona del Mar Green Tigers, a boys’ under-10 soccer team, won the California State Championship in Bakersfield on Saturday.
The Green Tigers, representing AYSO Region 57, beat Ladera Ranch, 3-2, in overtime behind a hat trick from Travis Campos. It was the same Ladera Ranch team that defeated the Green Tigers, 7-2, in the AYSO Section 11 regional in early March.
After going down, 2-0, in the first quarter, the team battled back with tremendous play by Christian Cernich and Evan Francis. The Green Tigers then played stifling defense, led by Harry Miller, Matthew Paulsen and Henry Bagdasar and the all-field play of Tyler Martinez. It helped the Tigers shut out Ladera for the final 45 minutes.
The Tigers tied the score on a counterattack goal by Travis Campos, and with seconds left in regulation, goalie Griffin Peters stopped a point-blank shot that caused minor bleeding to the nose.
In overtime, the Green Tigers scored on a dramatic direct kick by Travis Campos from 20 meters, after his brother, Dylan Campos, made a brilliant move on the goal.
The Green Tigers had defeated a team from Los Angeles, 4-3, to advance to the final. In that game, they received two goals each by Dylan and Travis Campos and a no-look assist by Grant Spruce.
The Green Tigers, the Area Q champions, had lost in the finals of the Section 11 tournament but received a wild-card berth to the state championships.
The team also included Vincent Pozzuoli.
