Sage Hill 5, Oxford 3

CYPRESS — The Lightning are tied for first place in the Academy League for the first time since the school’s inception because of Tuesday’s win over perennial stalwart Oxford.

Sophomore catcher Dusty Orrantia hit a two-out RBI single in the top of the sixth to put the Lightning (7-4, 5-1) ahead. Sage Hill had perfect relief from sophomore pitcher Sean Vogel, who struck out three Oxford (8-8, 5-1) batters to end the game.

Senior J.J. Berludson was three for five and junior Chris Griffin was two for three.

The Lightning will play host to Oxford Friday to determine first place in league at 3 p.m. Oxford has won the league title ever since Sage Hill has fielded a team.

COSTA MESA — Senior pitcher Andrew Millian threw his first complete game of his career, striking out eight and allowing one run on two hits and one walk Tuesday as the Mustangs’ advanced to the consolation championship at the Beach Pit Classic.

Costa Mesa (11-7) plays host to Northwood today at 2 p.m.

Millian (2-2) went one for three with an RBI.

Gabe Sanchez had a two-run double in the first inning. Mikey Molina had one hit with two RBIs and John Salyer tripled.

Newport Harbor 15, Keppel 7 ALHAMBRA — Senior pitcher Jane Messersmith had a first-inning home run and finished with four runs batted in as the Sailors dealt Keppel its first loss of the season Tuesday afternoon.

Senior catcher Robin Gautschi had four RBIs for the Sailors (7-7) and Messersmith held the Aztecs (10-1) to seven runs and five hits as Newport broke Keppel’s 10-game winning streak.

The Sailors will resume Sunset League play Tuesday at Fountain Valley at 3:15 p.m.

GARDEN GROVE — Sophomore catcher Sadie Hoeshen was four for four including a seventh-inning triple to lead the Lightning Tuesday.

Junior third baseman Morgan Hembarsky added a seventh inning home run and two RBI for Sage Hill (3-9, 1-0 in the Academy League).

The Lightning will play at rival St. Margaret’s on Friday at 3:15 p.m.

NEWPORT BEACH – Travis Ruffle shot an even par 36 to lead the Sailors to victory over the Griffins Tuesday afternoon at Big Canyon Country Club.

Steve Stoneman (38), Michal Clark (39), Erickson Klein (39), and Chase Bear (42) followed. The medalist, from Los Alamitos, shot 36.

The Sailors (8-4, 3-1 in the Sunset League) play Marina at Meadowlark Golf Course Thursday at 2 p.m.
