Professional music program seeks students

Those interested in attending the fourth annual GRAMMY Camp at USC, which offers 75 high school students a 14-day interactive residential summer music experience, need to apply by April 30.

Focusing on all aspects of commercial music, the program provides instruction by industry professionals in a creative environment with cutting-edge technology in professional facilities.

The program offers 15 music career tracks: Audio Engineering; Concert Promotion/Production; DJ-Remixing; Film Scoring; Music Journalism; Music Production; Video Game Music and Sound Design; and performance tracks in Keyboard; Guitar; Bass; Drums; Saxophone; Trumpet; Trombone and Songwriting.

All tracks culminate in media projects, CD recordings and/or showcase performances. GRAMMY Camp will be at the USC Thornton School of Music and other professional venues throughout Los Angeles.

Student garners national scholarship

Laguna Beach High School student Sheldon Eaton has been named the winner of a $2,500 National Achievement scholarship.

Eaton, who plans to study architecture, was one of more than 800 students nationwide to receive a portion of about $2.6 million in scholarships.

Next fundraiser for sick boy is April 13

A fun-raiser for the Christofer Miracle Fund will be from 2 to 7 p.m. April 13 at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Laguna Beach, 1085 Laguna Canyon Road.

The funds will benefit the Christofer Krajec, a 3-year-old boy who has an inoperable brain tumor.

He can no longer see, speak, walk or use his hands; the family is seeking funds to pay for treatments not covered by insurance.

The event will feature kids’ activities, games and a bounce house; music by artists including Jason Feddy, Jasso and Garcia, and World Anthem; art projects; face painting; food and wine from local restaurants; and a silent auction featuring jewelry and works by artists including John Eagle and Doug Miller.

Kindergarten registration opens

Registration for kindergarten at El Morro and Top of the World elementary schools begins April 16.

Registration will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., through June 27. Parent orientation will be at 9:30 a.m. May 21 at both campuses; open house will be from 6 to 7 p.m. May 22.

Free college admission seminar approaches

College Focus, an organization of college counselors, will hold a seminar on producing a perfect college application from 7 to 8 p.m. at Laguna Beach High School.

Topics will include how to work with teachers and counselors; a step-by-step method to get kids into top colleges; community service, which summer program and extracurricular activities colleges like to see; and what college admissions officers look for in winning applications.

College to offer public filmmaking course

Laguna College of Art & Design will offer a filmmaking course as part of its summer community education programs Mondays through Thursdays from July 7-24.

The class will run from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Participants will have the opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art Apple lab while creating their own short film.

This course is designed for media artists to tell their stories through digital production, and will cover all aspects of production from script to screen.

The goal of the course will be for each student to create a short movie and prepare it for digital distribution and festivals. ROP and college credit is available.

Instructor Wendy Milette is a graduate of the USC School of Cinematic Arts, with a bachelor’s in critical studies and an master’s in production. She is also a certified Apple Pro, and leads the MY HERO Film Project.

Graduates will become an Apple Pro with a certificate in Final Cut Pro-Level One.
