Newport Beach Police detained two juveniles earlier this week for burglary near a Roman Catholic Church after responding to a call of suspicious activity at a church construction site.

Police responded to the 700 block of Domingo Drive about 7 p.m. Monday near the Our Lady Queen of Angels Church, 2046 Mar Vista Drive, where they found two juveniles at a church construction site and evidence of vandalism, Newport Beach Police Lt. Jeff Lu said.

Police detained the two minors on suspicion of commercial burglary after they discovered a large construction container filled with tools and building equipment at the site that appeared to have been forced open, he said.

No estimate of how much damage from the incident will cost to repair was immediately available.

Efforts to reach church leaders were unsuccessful Friday.

Police will not release any more information about the two minors detained in connection with the alleged break-in because of their age, Lu said.
