SANTA CRUZ — The UC Irvine men’s golf team finished second by one shot in the 62nd annual tournament that concluded Thursday at Pasatiempo Golf Club.
Saint Mary’s won the title with a three-round score of 880. The Anteaters, who posted the best final-round score of 294, and Michigan State tied for the runner-up spot with totals of 881 in the 16-team field. This was UCI’s sixth top-five finish in nine tournaments this season.
Jack Newman of Michigan State was medalist with a 54-hole total of 4-over 214 (69-67-78) on the par-70 course.
UCI sophomore John Chin (70-74-75) and junior Sean Shahi (74-74-71) tied for fourth with totals of 219.
Senior Kenny Kim finished 10th at 221 junior Tim Cha was 21st at 224 and freshman Bryan Harris was 64th at 233.
Jack Newman of Michigan State was medalist with (4-over 214) on the par-70 course.
Coach Paul Smolinski’s Anteaters return to action April 11-13 in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.

COSTA MESA — Sophomore reliever Justin Peterson came in the top of the eighth inning and struck out Abel Medina with the bases loaded to get out of the inning as the Pirates held on to win their sixth straight Orange Empire Conference game Thursday.
Peterson picked up his first save of the year.
Freshman right fielder Ryan Sheeks went three for four with a double, triple, and one RBI for Orange Coast (22-7-1, 6-1 in conference).
The Pirates, who have won nine of 10 games, play at Fullerton Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

COSTA MESA — Point Loma left fielder Mike Miles’ two-run double in the 13th inning proved to be the game-winning hit in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Thursday.
Center fielder Tyson Leighton went three for six with one RBI and one run, while shortstop Zach Leighton went two for five with two RBIs for the Lions (14-16, 5-13 in conference). PLNU improved to 16-14, 9-9.
Vanguard plays host to The Master’s in a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader that starts at noon.
