Orange Coast 8, Santa Ana 4

SANTA ANA — Sophomore center fielder Cory Olson led the winners going three for five with three RBIs and a home run in the Orange Empire Conference game Saturday.

OCC freshman third baseman Drew Hillman was three for five with one RBI and freshman shortstop Ryan Dunn was also three for five to help the Pirates improve to 15-6-1, 2-1 in conference.

Freshman pitcher Chris Licon worked 6 1/3 solid innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs while striking out two. He did not walk a batter.

Sophomore left-hander Brandon Dixon worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season.

Chris Fung and David Seiler contributed two hits apiece to the Pirates 18-hit attack against five Dons pitchers.

Santa Ana fell to 14-7, 2-1.

EL CAJON — Sophomore center fielder Tyson Leighton homered and tripled, helping the Lions win the second game of a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday.

Leighton drove in two runs in Game 2, and junior third baseman Zach Falk went three for four with two runs batted in.

Junior starter Christopher Carls picked up the win after allowing one earned run and four hits in six innings for Vanguard (7-13, 3-11 in conference).

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Vanguard University sophomore Aze Perkins earned All-American honors by finishing fifth in the men’s 60-meter high hurdles in a season-best 8.26 seconds Saturday.

IRVINE — Senior Alex Sundling won at No. 1 singles and freshman Stephen Stege won at No. 5 singles for the host Anteaters in the Big West Conference match Saturday.

Trevor Dobson and Douglas Taylor teamed to win their No. 3 doubles set, 8-7, but the Gauchos won the doubles point.

UCI fell to 4-6, 1-1 in conference.

UCSB is 4-4, 1-1.

COSTA MESA — The Lions didn’t lose a single set in the easy nonconference win Saturday at Vanguard.

The doubles teams of sophomore Dominic Stockler and freshman Tino Brodar, sophomore Florian Lemke and junior Greg Chevalier, and junior Tomas Frank and sophomore Garrett Gillon all won for Vanguard (3-4). Each player also won each of his singles sets by at least a 6-3 margin.

COSTA MESA — Pitchers Patty Olvera, Kelsey Boyer and Bethany Dempster combined to allow no earned runs in 11 innings as the Lions swept the nonconference doubleheader Saturday at Vanguard.

No. 10 Vanguard (21-5) scored all of its runs in Game 1 in the first inning, taking advantage of two Patten errors. Junior shortstop Sarah Howe went three for three with a triple and run scored, while Boyer scattered two hits over five innings for the win. Dempster threw two scoreless innings for her second save.

In Game 2, Vanguard scored seven times in the fourth inning to break the game open. Patty Olvera earned the win while senior first baseman Jen Olvera, her older sister, went two for three with three RBIs.

Vanguard plays at Biola on Tuesday.

FULLERTON — Senior forward Miranda Forry finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks in the Anteaters’ Big West Conference game Saturday that ended the regular season.

Sophomore guard Rebecca Maessen and junior guard Kirian Ishizaki each scored 12 points for UCI (7-23, 3-13 in conference).

The Anteaters will be the No. 8 seed in the Big West Tournament. They open with No. 5 Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at noon on Wednesday at the Anaheim Convention Center.

IRVINE — Junior Sarah Frost scored the game-winning goal 1 minute, 27 seconds into the fourth overtime period, lifting UCI in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Saturday at UCI.

Frost and sophomore Kat Plummer had a game-high three goals for the No. 9-ranked ’Eaters (10-7, 3-4 in conference). Senior Jessica Lewis added a pair of goals and senior keeper Lauren Machanis made 12 saves.

No. 8 ASU is 11-9, 1-4.
