A tight nonleague boys’ tennis match between Laguna Beach and Whitney was won by the Wildcats, 10-8 Tuesday (March 3) on the Breakers’ home court.

An injury to Benito Romeo proved to undermine Laguna’s quest for the win.

Romeo, playing at No. 2 singles, injured his back after his first set.

“We could have beaten them had Benito not gotten injured,” Laguna co-head coach Jonee Earl said. “It was a tough blow.”

Laguna did get a sweep at No. 1 doubles from Ben Biscarrat and Jared Berkson. At No. 2 doubles, Noah Michelson and Mikey Rubel won two of three.

Earl said that Biscarrat and Michelson had been pair at No. 1 doubles but split up the duo.

Graham Unterberger and Paul Salomon, in his first year on varsity, pair up at No. 3 doubles.

Laguna’s singles line-up had freshman Jake Michaels at No. 1, Romeo at No. 2 and Rex Miller at No. 3 singles.

Previously, the Breakers picked up their initial win of the season by defeating visiting Huntington Beach, 11-7.

Laguna returns to the court Tuesday (March 11) for a 3:15 p.m. nonleague match at Sage Hill.

The Breakers will host Villa Park Wednesday (March 12) and then travel Thursday (March 13) to face Woodbridge. Both nonleague matches begin at 3:15 p.m.
