NEWPORT BEACH — Pitcher Jane Messersmith struck out 14 batters giving up one hit and one run to help lead the Sailors to a nonleague win over their Back Bay rival at Newport Harbor Monday.
Newport Harbor senior Lauren Talbott, who had a sparkling performance Saturday, contributed a double against the Sea Kings (1-3). Talbott pitched a no-hitter and went four for four at the plate in the Sailors’ 12-0 win over Cabrillo in the Downey Tournament. Harbor (2-1), guided by first-year coach Melissa Branch, lost to South Torrance, 4-2, in the tourney opener.
CdM junior Leslee Kaczmarek, a girls’ water polo standout in her first game back with the Sea Kings, hit a double in the fourth inning. She advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout from senior Karissa Dempsey.

MONTEBELLO — The Mustangs rallied in the seventh inning, scoring nine runs with two outs in a pool-play game of the Newport Elks Tournament’s Costa Mesa Division at Schurr Monday.
Costa Mesa (3-0), trailed 8-5 heading into the seventh. Tyler Peterson hit a two-run double to start the rally. Cody Spoulos had an RBI single as part of the comeback.
Luke Boulger (three for five), Nick Pederson (two for four), Gabe Sanchez (two for four) and Brian Waldron (two for five) also contributed to the win.
It was the last game of pool play and teams will be seeded today.

COSTA MESA — Senior Sam Trancoso went three for three with two doubles, two stolen bases, two RBIs and three runs scored for the Eagles in their pool-play win of the Newport Elks Tournament’s Costa Mesa Division at Estancia Monday.
The game was called with one out for Estancia (1-2) in the sixth inning due to darkness
Senior Eddie Tomasek went two for two with two stolen bases, two RBIs and one run scored. Senior shortstop Ryan Redding scored four runs and had two stolen bases. In addition to a single, Redding was hit by a pitch twice and drew a walk.
