H.B. teams still in as playoffs continue
Huntington Beach and Edison entered the week still with a shot at winning a CIF-Southern Section girls’ basketball championship.
Huntington had little problem with visiting La Mirada Saturday in the first-round of the Division I-A playoffs and romped past the Matadores, 58-15. The Oilers were well in control of the game by the half as they took a 31-3 lead into the break.
Noelani Viloria hit four three-point shots en route to a game-high 20 points.
The junior point guard also grabbed seven rebounds. Three of her 20 points came when she made a shot from half-court with one second left in the first half.
Senior center Jasmine Erving made her presence known with 16 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots.
“The girls played very focused, and I was happy to see them get their 20th win this season,” said Huntington Coach Russell McClurg who now has 200 wins as a prep coach.
Entering Wednesday’s second-round game against third-ranked Mira Costa, McClurg’s overall record at Huntington was 88-52.
The score from Wednesday’s game wasn’t available at press time. A win Wednesday would advance Huntington to Saturday’s quarterfinal round where they will face the winner of Wednesday’s second-round game between Mission Viejo and No. 6 Canyon Springs.
“As for the 20th win, all I can say is thanks to all the girls and parents for all the hard work over the last 10 years. I am very thankful to all the girls who made this possible. It was a special night for me.”
Sunset League champion Edison (21-3) came off a long layoff to defeat Monrovia, 59-40, Saturday in the first-round of the Division II-AA playoffs.
The Chargers, the division’s second-ranked team, got a game-high 31 points from Priscila Cergol, 10 from Kelly Peterson and nine from Michelle Yamasaki.
Monrovia was the No. 3 team from the Rio Hondo League.
“I thought our girls played hard but we were a little rusty with an 11-day layoff,” Edison Coach Corey Kelly said. “But give Monrovia credit. They came out and played well. Once we settled down, I thought we played well and took control of the game.”
Edison played a second-round game Wednesday at 15th-ranked Beverly Hills. The score wasn’t available at press time. Should Edison win Wednesday, the Chargers would move on to the quarterfinal round Saturday to face the winner of Wednesday’s second-round game between No. 9 Norco and No. 10 Wilson of Hacienda Heights.
Thirteenth-ranked Marina had its season come to an end in Pasadena last Saturday when the visiting Vikings, the No. 3 team from the Sunset League, lost 68-54 to Rio Hondo League champ and No. 13-ranked Blair in the first-round of the Division II-AA playoffs.
Golden West League champion Ocean View, which drew a first-round bye in the Division III-A playoffs, had its season ended at home Saturday by Chaffey.
The No. 3 Tigers, the runner-up in the Mt. Baldy League, scored a 61-57 victory over the seventh-ranked Seahawks.
Three Seahawks finished in double-figures for Ocean View, led by Kelsey Harris’ 16 points. Clarissa Holz and Rachel Sweezy scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Ocean View which ended the year at 18-9.

Marina’s season came to an end Feb. 13 when the Vikings were edged by host Tustin, 62-61, in one of seven Division I-A wild-card games.
Edison played in one of the other six I-A wild-card games on Feb. 13 and the Chargers slipped past host West Torrance, 54-53.
Marina had rallied from a 16-6 first-quarter deficit to go up by five at the half. The Vikings extended their lead to 10 points midway through the third quarter when Tustin staged a comeback. Near the end of a back-and-forth fourth quarter, the Tillers hit a free throw with nine seconds left to take a 62-61 lead.
Marina had one final chance at the win but missed its final shot.
Garrett James and Brendan Holmes each scored 18 points to pace the Vikings.
The Vikings finished 13-14 overall.
“We didn’t have the year that we had anticipated,” Marina Coach Roger Holmes said. “There were many obstacles that the team had to deal with. We do have 10 returners and are hoping that we can get things back together for next year.”
The Vikings hit 12 three-point shots in the game to give them 389 for the season. That number ranks second all-time in both the state and nationally, second only to last year’s Marina team which set both the state and national single-season record with 437.
Brendan Holmes, who hit five of Marina’s 12 three-pointers against Tustin, now has the all-time Orange County single-season record for three-point baskets with 149. The old record, 145, was set by Jason Garey of University during the 2000-01 season.
The 149 also puts Holmes at No. 2 on the state’s single-season three-point baskets list, Roger Holmes said.
In its 54-53 win at West Torrance, Edison got 21 points from Kyle Boswell and 18 more from Carl Eberts to advance to a first-round game last Friday at El Toro. The Chargers (15-13) saw their season come to an end as third-ranked El Toro, champion of the Sea View League, claimed a 57-42 victory. Boswell led Edison with 10 points.
