IRVINE — Senior center Arvydas Vaitiekus scored 20 points, four coming in overtime, to help lead Vanguard to an upset against No. 5-ranked Concordia in a Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday.
Senior Greg Gusiff scored 16 points, as did junior reserve Andrew Ellis for the Lions (15-7, 9-5 in conference). Vanguard sophomore Dennis Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product who hit three of his seven three-pointers, added 13 points and sophomore Greg Scott had 10 points.
Senior De’Auonte’ Johnson contributed nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds to help the Lions outrebound Concordia, 42-35.
Scott knocked down two jump shots in the final 67 seconds of regulation, the latter coming with 22 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
Vaitiekus’ four points in overtime helped the Lions outscore the Eagles, 9-4.
Vanguard plays host to Westmont Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

IRVINE — Senior guard Jessica Richter led the No. 4-ranked Lions with 19 points and junior forward Lauren Gregory added 13 points in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday night.
Freshman guard Sarah Boyd finished with nine points and seven assists for Vanguard (17-3, 13-1 in conference).
The Lions, who made 14 of 16 free throws, outscored the Eagles (9-14, 3-11) by 14 in the first half.

COSTA MESA — The No. 10-ranked Lions swept the nonconference doubleheader Tuesday at Vanguard.
In Game 1, senior Jen Olvera improved to 3-0, striking out 13 and allowing just a single hit in six innings for Vanguard (8-0). Junior shortstop Sarah Howe was two for two and scored a run, and junior Ashley Ocasio had a pinch-hit, two-RBI single.
Brigham Young of Hawaii struck first in the second game, but the Lions responded for the victory. Sophomore Kelsey Boyer pitched five innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out five.
Freshman Patty Olvera pitched the last two innings for the first save of her Vanguard career.
The Lions play host to Bellhaven Friday at 1 p.m.
