Record belongs to Becker

Nick Becker became the career scoring leader of the Huntington Beach High boys’ basketball team when he scored 16 points Friday during a 59-43 Sea View League victory at Trabuco Hills.

The 16 points gave Becker 1,534 points for his career and eclipsed the previous record of 1,533, set in 1994 by nine-time NFL Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez of the Kansas City Chiefs.

“It’s definitely a relief,” Becker said in response to his knowing he was closing in on the record and then breaking it. “I feel very accomplished, and it’s a great achievement. It’s awesome to set this record.

“I give a lot of credit to my teammates. They have taken a lot of pressure off me this year and have set up a lot of one-on-one situations for me. My coaches also have been superb and phenomenal.”

Becker figures to add significantly to his career scoring record: The Oilers had four more league games remaining on their schedule entering the week, in addition to CIF Southern Section postseason play that begins in two weeks.

“I am extremely proud of Nick for this enormous accomplishment,” Huntington Coach Fabian Luna said. “Players as talented as Nick do not come around very often, and it is an absolute pleasure to witness this achievement.

“Nick works extremely hard, but he is a team-first guy and does what is necessary for us to win games. Nick gives a lot of credit to his teammates for helping make his job easier.”

A special announcement regarding Becker’s record was made prior to Wednesday’s home league game against Northwood. Luna also said some type of ceremony could take place next week.
