UC Irvine def. UC Santa Cruz

IRVINE — Freshman Jordan DuFault had eight kills to lead the Anteaters to a 30-22, 31-29, 30-24 nonconference win Tuesday at Crawford Court.

Junior Jon Steller and freshman Alex DaPron tallied seven kills each for No. 9-ranked UCI (6-5). Steller also fired five aces.

UCI sophomore Cole Reinholm added six kills, while Anthony Spittle recorded 30 assists. Freshman Cory Yoder, and seniors Mike Ortiz and Brett Kohout ended the night with five kills each, with Kohout leading all players with seven blocks.

The Banana Slugs (6-4) had two players in double-figure kills led by Brad Sullivan with 12 and Bryan Shires with 10.

UC Santa Cruz led, 23-20, in Game 2 before Steller stepped back to the service line and fired three consecutive aces to knot the score, 23-23. The Banana Slugs opened another three-point advantage at 28-23 when Steller was the man again recording three of UCI’s four kills in a 3-1 spurt to tie the score, 29-29. A block by Steller and Brett Kohout set up game point which was an ace fired by DuFault (31-29). The Banana Slugs out-hit UCI .310 to .207, but the Anteaters fired five service aces and had four blocks combined with six Santa Cruz service errors.

UC Irvine will travel to No. 4 UCLA Friday for a 7 p.m. match at Pauley Pavilion.

MEN’S GOLF

Ping-Arizona Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. — UC Irvine endured a tough day on the course Tuesday as the Anteaters finished 14th of 16 teams in the event that concluded at Arizona National Golf Club.

Tennessee won the tournament with a 20-under total of 832 over three rounds.

UNLV (835) was second and UCLA (847) third. UCI, which was tied for seventh after the completion of the second round Tuesday morning, shot a 25-over 309 in the final round and finished with a 54-hole total of 887.

Georgia Southern tied the Anteaters for 14th place.

UCLA’s Kevin Chappell shot a seven-under-par 64 in Tuesday’s final round to claim medalist honors with a 15-under total of 198.

Freshman Bryan Harris led the Anteaters with a 21st-place finish of 3-over 216 (70-72-74). Senior Kenny Kim placed 41st at 221 (72-73-76), junior Sean Shahi was 45th at 222 (71-75-76) and sophomore John Chin was 73rd at 228 (72-73-83). Junior Tim Cha withdrew from Tuesday’s final round due to illness. He shot 74-77 in the first two rounds.

UCI returns to action Feb. 25-26 to play host for the Anteater Invitational at Santa Ana Country Club.
