Two locals compete in All-Star football game
Robbie Boyer and Carlo Valdes, Newport Beach residents who both starred for Mater Dei High, competed in the Southern California Bowl, a high school All-Star football game at Cal State Fullerton Saturday.
They were on the Coastal team, which lost to Inland, 27-13.
Boyer, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound senior receiver, led the Monarchs with 57 receptions for 1,026 yards and 14 touchdowns. The former Newport-Mesa Junior All-American Football standout has yet to make a commitment for college, but is being recruited by USC, UCLA, Air Force, Harvard, San Diego, San Diego State and Southern Methodist.
Recently, Boyer was named all-state, third-team offense by calhisports.com.
Valdes, a 6-2, 200-pound senior receiver, had 41 catches, 786 yards and six touchdowns for the Monarchs in the fall. He had a season-high 207 receiving yards and nine catches in a 50-32 win over American Fork Sept. 14.
