UCI’S KIM SHOOTS 79

LA JOLLA — UC Irvine senior Kenny Kim shot a seven-over-par 79 in the opening round of the Buick Invitational Thursday at Torrey Pines Golf Course.

Kim, who played the South Course, began his round on the 10th hole and had five bogeys and a birdie on his first nine, then carded three bogeys on his second nine.

He and playing partners Nick Flanagan and Travis Perkins will go off the first hole of the North Course today at 10:30 a.m.

Troy Matteson is the leader of the tournament after shooting a seven-under 65 in the first round.

Kim gained a spot in the Buick by winning the qualifying tournament Oct. 20 with a four-under round of 68 at Torrey Pines South.

HOLE IN ONE

Tom Wiessler, a regular at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club, made a hole-in-one on No. 10 (125 yards) on the Mesa Linda course, using an eight-iron, on Dec. 31. It was witnessed by Ron Pettey and Mel Heckman.
