Former Deputy City Administrator Paul Emery took over the city’s top job as interim city administrator last week as the city searched for a permanent candidate for the position. Outgoing City Administrator Penny Culbreth-Graft started her new job as city manager for Colorado Springs, Colo., recently.

Next police academy slated to begin Feb. 26

The Citizen’s Police Academy has just graduated its 27th class, with 21 residents receiving instruction on the work done by Huntington Beach police. The program mixes classroom instruction with demonstrations by the K-9 unit, SWAT team and Aero Bureau, as well as ride-alongs and mock scenarios.

Voting site set up early for primary elections

Do presidential primaries and ballot initiatives have you itching to vote? Those who can’t wait can hit the polls early in Huntington Beach, as the City Clerk’s office will be an early voting site for the upcoming election.

Early voting will take place Jan. 22-Jan. 25, as well as Jan. 28 and Jan. 29, on the second floor of City Hall, 2000 Main St. Any registered voter in Orange County can take advantage of early voting there. Election day is still Feb. 5.

Anyone registered with a party affiliation is eligible to vote in that party’s primary. Those who declined to state a party can vote on statewide propositions, and they are also allowed to vote on a Democratic or American Independent Party ballot if they ask for one.

Jan. 22 is the last day to register to vote for the primary; forms are available at City Hall, all Huntington Beach libraries and post offices, and the Rodgers Senior Center. Forms in English, Vietnamese, Spanish, Korean and Chinese can be found in the City Clerk’s Office. For more information, call City Clerk Joan Flynn at (714) 536-5227.

Library offers seminar with investment advice

The Huntington Beach Library will host a free investment seminar by the Evelyn Brust Foundation. Attendees at the 90-minute event, titled “Investor Education @ your library,” will also have the chance to stick around for one-on-one counseling sessions.

The national campaign is run by the American Library Assn. and the Investor Protection Trust. The seminar is scheduled for 9 a.m. Feb. 2 at the Central Library, 7111 Talbert Ave., in the Talbert Room. To pre-register, call (714) 960-8836.
