Boys’ team solid at tourney

The Laguna Beach boys’ soccer team posted a 1-1-1 record at the three-day Irvine Team Challenge.

The tournament began Dec. 14 and concluded Monday.

The Breakers opened tournament play with a 3-2 loss to host Irvine. The Vaqueros led 2-1 at the half and took advantage of three scoring opportunities following penalty calls against the Breakers. Scoring goals for Laguna were Austin Hyden and Daniel Selevan. Assists went to Hyden, Tom Hopper and Bryce Healy.

In goal, Alex Germano had three saves and Michael Tachovsky one save.

The Breakers played two games Saturday, the first ending in a 1-1 tie against El Dorado. Laguna had taken a 1-0 halftime lead on a goal by Healy with the assist going to Edgar Rabadon.

Germano and Sheldon Eaton each had a save. Laguna capped the tournament late Saturday with a complete performance that resulted in a 5-0 shutout of Northwood, a game in which the Breakers led 3-0 at the half.

Laguna’s balanced scoring saw Hyden, Hopper, Eaton and Tim Fulton all score once. Another goal was scored by a Northwood player.

Caine Fair recorded three assists and Tachovsky, John Schnedegar and Noah Michelon each had an assist.

Germano had one save to register the shutout. Laguna Coach Patrick Coyne was happy with the end result of the tournament.

Prior to participating in the Irvine Team Challenge, Laguna played JSerra to a 1-1 tie. Healy scored for Laguna and Luis Portillo scored the JSerra goal.

Hyden had an assist. Germano had five saves and Eaton one save.

“It is early in the season and we are trying some new plays and positions,” Coyne said. “We will be ready for league and the CIF playoffs.”
