Enough left for a repeat?
The 2007-08 prep basketball season got underway this week for the Laguna Beach Breakers, who defeated Savanna, 46-39, Monday in the opening round of the La Quinta Tournament.
Three Breakers scored in double figures, led by Ryan Lawler’s 14 points. Marcus Hairston and Kevin Buck each scored 11 points.
Below is a capsule look at the 2007-08 Breakers:
Head Coach: Bret Fleming (13th year)
2006-07 record: 23-6
League record/finish: 7-2 (champions)
CIF results: Advanced to second round of playoffs
Last time won CIF title: 1962
Returning starters: Charley Bowman (6-0, Sr.); Marcus Hairston (5-11, Sr.); Ryan Lawler (6-4, Jr.).
Other returners: Dylan Roley (6-3, Jr.).
Other key players: Kevin Buck (6-2, Sr.); Kenny Sullivan (6-7, Sr.); Jacky Norris (5-5, Sr.); Dylan Doumeng (5-9, Sr.); Jason House (5-7, Sr.); Parker King (6-0, Sr.); Graham Unterberger (6-0, Sr.); Matt Ininns (6-2, St.).
Team tidbits: Laguna set a school record for wins in a single season last year but lost Orange Coast League co-MVPS Cheyne Martin and Brian Delino, as well as first-team all-league player Bob Monroe, to graduation. Still, the Breakers have talented returning starters in first-team all-leaguer Ryan Lawler and second-team picks Marcus Hairston and Charley Bowman.
Coach’s outlook: “We should field a competitive team. They’re a hard-working, cohesive group that plays good team basketball. We’re looking forward to a successful year.”
