SAN LUIS OBISPO — UC Irvine junior Laura Olvera finished third to lead the Anteaters’ women’s team to a third-place showing Saturday at Cuesta College.

Olvera, who had been the conference runner-up the last two seasons, completed the 6,000-meter course in 21 minutes, 45.8 seconds, well off the pace of winner Megan Lewis (21:16) and her UC Santa Barbara teammate and runner-up Bethany Nickless (21:35.6).

The UCI men finished fifth, paced by junior Nick Mosey, who was 19th with a time of 26:18 over the 8,000-meter course.

UCI junior Candice Proctor finished 10th in the women’s race (22:24.8), joining Olvera on the all-conference team selected from the top 10 finishers.

UCI junior Samantha Constantini was 11th (22:26.9) and UCI senior Sara Mickelson was 12th (22:31).

The Anteaters women were also represented by freshman Katherine Nielsen (23rd in 22:59.3), junior Lauren Chramosta (38th in 23:36.6), senior Amber Gordon (40th in 23:51.6), junior Meryl Follosco (43rd in 23:59.2) and junior Kendall Bruton (44th in 24:01.8).

Coach Vince O’Boyle’s women’s team finished with 59 points, bested by UCSB (44) and UC Riverside (57). Long Beach state was fourth with 93 and UC Davis (136) was fifth in the nine-school meet.

For the UCI men, senior Sky Johnston was 20th in 26:19.4. Sophomore Colin Hacker (26th in 26:37.5), sophomore Bryan Lopez (36th in 27:04), senior Adrian Doty (46th in 27:33.4), sophomore Rusty Whisman (48th in 27:36.5), senior George Morris (50th in 27:41.9), freshman Victor Bonilla (53rd in 27:51) and Greg Thompson (57th in 28:40) also represented the Anteaters.

The UCI men finished with 137 points, bested by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (15), UCSB (53), UC Riverside (79) and Long Beach State (134). UC Davis (140), Cal State Fullerton (187) and Cal State Northridge (240) finished behind the Anteaters.

It was the second straight team title for the UCSB women, while the Cal Poly men, who swept the top five spots in the race, led by winner Phillip Reid (25:12.4) earned its fifth consecutive conference crown.

The UCI men’s and women’s teams will compete in the NCAA West Regional, Nov. 10 at Eugene, Ore.

MEN’S SOCCER

UC Davis 2, UC Irvine 1

DAVIS — Junior Michael Willrich scored his first goal as an Anteater with an assist by sophomore Kevin Santora in the 80th minute, but it was too little too late in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

Davis had 17 shots to the Anteaters nine, as UCI freshman goalie Pat Barton made five saves.

Ryan McCowan had seven saves for the Aggies, who received goals from Nicholas Lind in the 63rd minute and Ian Conklin in the 73rd minute. Lind had the assist on the second goal by the hosts (8-4-2, 3-3-1 in conference).

UCI fell to 6-4-4, 1-3-2 and is now 1-4-4 after opening the season 5-0.

Coach George Kuntz’s Anteaters had outscored opponents, 15-3, in their five opening wins. They have been outscored, 15-9, since.

UCI plays host to No. 15-ranked UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. UCSB, the defending national champion, routed UCI, 4-0, at home on Oct. 3.

UCI is tied for last in the seven-team conference with Cal State Fullerton, which visits Anteater Stadium Saturday at 7 p.m.

Azusa Pacific 2, Vanguard 1

COSTA MESA — Andrew Elliott scored an unassisted goal in the third minute for the Lions, who nearly upset the NAIA’s top-ranked team Saturday night.

The Cougars (16-0-1, 9-0-1 in conference) rallied with two goals, the equalizer in the 39th minute and the game-winner in the 43rd. The Lions dropped to 9-6, 4-5.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Azusa Pacific 3, Vanguard 0

COSTA MESA — The Lions failed to score against No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific Saturday night in the last regular-season game.

The Golden State Athletic Conference champions outshot Vanguard (8-5-8, 3-4-2 in conference), recording 15 attempts to the Lions’ seven.

The Cougars (14-1-1, 10-0-0) won the GSAC title outright Wednesday with a 5-0 win over Hope International.

Theresa Broad, Randie Massro, and Mari Kasamoto all scored for Azusa Pacific.

Goalkeeper Jillian Foss had four saves for the Lions, while Jill Colfer-Martinson recorded four for the Cougars.

FULLERTON — The Lions swept, 30-21, 30-27, 32-30, in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday night.

Kelsey Wirt had 18 kills and 25 digs for the Lions (9-12, 7-9 in conference), while Heather Dejongh added 12. Meghan Walsh had 25 assists, followed by Michal Shortridge (21) for Vanguard.

Jillian Lane had 18 kills for Hope (6-15, 3-13), and Larissa Niu finished with 25 assists.

Vanguard plays host to The Master’s Tuesday at 7 p.m.
