Local travel-ball team makes most of tourney
The trip was a year in the making, but the memories are sure to last a lifetime.
The Newport Beach Storm, a travel-ball team, went 7-2 in a tournament in Cooperstown, N.Y., where the boys made the most of their time there in late August.
Pitching from Jeff Saroyan, Tyler McPhillips, Max Stone and Jack Harris helped the Storm open the tourney with five straight wins. Blake Grable, Brett Nelson, Casey Worden, Chandler Hughes-Whitbord, Scott McGowan, Ryan Griffin and Nick Roco also provided quality relief pitching.
Hughes-Whitbord hit a walk-off home run, as did Worden. Both home runs set off wild celebrations. Conor Roche and Griffin also had home runs.
