MAILBAG: Parents remember: Safety comes first
It is so unfortunate the district needed to take down the Pop Warner Football awning at Costa Mesa High School (“District declares awning unsafe,” Sept. 18), but if the structure didn’t meet state safety regulations, then it is really best for the children to remove it.
About 10 years ago, much needed improvements to athletic facilities at Corona del Mar High School made by a couple of parent groups were also removed, so it is really not fair to say “this never would happen in Newport Beach because they’d be afraid all the soccer moms with money would complain” or that rules are bent more often for Newport Beach parents.
I know the school groups I have been associated with learned this lesson a long time ago and are careful to work with the district to create a detailed plan of the work to be done, who will perform the work and the time frame for completion.
I have always found the district to be very cooperative when it comes to parent group money being used to improve the school so long as you comply with their procedures.
If there is a silver lining to this situation, at least more parent groups will be aware of the need to work with the district, not just their school site administration, on these issues.
