Team Cautious rallies to win title
Team Cautious, a 14-and-Under South Huntington Beach girls’ softball team, won five of six games to capture its division title at the Cypress Labor Day Tournament.
South Huntington Beach got contributions from every player on its roster, as each had a hit, RBI and scored a run. Team Cautious players are Kendra Hennegan, Emily Richards, Bre McCaa, Courtney Moyer, Jessica Kuiper, Angie Santopoalo, Stephanie Coyne, Berlin Yarnall, Ashley Arrington, Sam Santopoalo, Brenda Bott, Liz Arledge, Devin Sanchez and Rachel Vitali. Mike Coyne, Mike McCaa, Doug Johnson and Tony Santopoalo coach the team.
Team Cautious 4, Cypress 3
Team Cautious scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to wipe out a 3-1 deficit and post a tournament-opening victory.
Cypress 6, Team Cautious 5
In its second game — against another opponent from Cypress — Team Cautious opened up a 4-2 lead, but Cypress scored four runs in the top of the third to take the lead for good.
Team Cautious 8, Garden Grove 2
Garden Grove took a 2-0 lead through two innings, but Team Cautious came up with an eight-run third inning — scoring all eight runs with two out in the inning — to take control of the game.
Team Cautious 7, West Garden Grove 6
Team Cautious found itself down four runs after the top of the first inning, then roared back to claim its third win of the tournament.
Courtney Moyer delivered the game-winning RBI.
Team Cautious 8, Cypress 1
Needing a win here in order to reach the championship game, Team Cautious easily defeated a Cypress squad who had handed the locals their only tournament loss.
Team Cautious established its dominance early, sending nine batters to the plate to score five runs in its first at-bat. Brenda Bott opened the game with a single and later stole home to produce the game’s first run. Jessica Kuiper drove in Stephanie Coyne (who had singled) on a fielder’s choice and Sam Santopoalo had an RBI double and later scored on a hit by Liz Arledge.
Team Cautious 11, Los Alamitos 6
Team Cautious batted through its order in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring, with two out, seven runs to overcome a two-run deficit and lay claim to the tournament title.
Jessica Kuiper went three for three with four RBI and run scored, Rachel Vitali went three for three and scored twice, Stephanie Coyne went two for two with an RBI and scored three runs, Liiz Arledge had two hits, an RBI and scored a run, Kendra Hennegan went two for two with an RBI, Emily Richards singled with two RBI, Ashley Arrington singled twice, Brenda Bott doubled and Bre McCaa singled and scored a run.
Sam Santopoalo and Berlin Yarnall each beat out a throw to first base to keep the two-out rally going.
In other softball action:
The HB Bombers, an 8-and-Under team out of South Huntington Beach Girls Fastpitch Softball, finished second in its division at the Cypress Labor Day Tournament.
The Bombers went 4-1 in the tournament with their only loss coming to West Garden Grove. Dani Dennison pitched the entire tournament for the locals and recorded a pair of no-hitters.
Huntington’s offense was led by Dennison, Giovanna Liggett, Timre Tonti, Jessica Karns and Cassidy Dennison. The defense was led by Janie Hammond, Jessica Karns, Amanda Hadley, Shelby Chickman, Brittany Trebil, Rachel Rosen, Tina Barnes, Jaden Gendry and Maddie Primrose.
The HB Bombers are coached by Dareld Karns, Rich Dennison, Jill Hammond and Randy Byrnes.
In youth soccer:
HB United wins tournament
HB United, a boys’ Under-13 team out of AYSO Region 56, defeated host Costa Mesa, 3-1, in a shootout to capture the championship at the Costa Mesa McMillan Soccer Tournament.
HB United went 2-1-1 at the tournament. They defeated Lake Forest, 4-2, in their opener, getting goals from AJ Garrity, Kevin Piscopo, Mikey Buntich and Billy Morehouse. They followed that win with a 4-1 decision over Tustin. Jonny Marriott scored twice and Morehouse and Garrity each once.
In the championship match, Buntich scored in regulation as HB United and Costa Mesa played to a 1-1 tie. In the shootout, HB United outscored Costa Mesa, 3-1, behind goals by Joey De Marco, Scott Weaver and Garrity.
Tyler Jones, who was outstanding, turned away three penalty shots during the shootout.
HB United is coached by Mike Weaver and Jim De Marco.
