Champions crowned in leagues
The 2007 Boys & Girls Clubs of Laguna Beach Girls Basketball League concluded last week with postseason playoff action.
More than 158 local girls competed in a league that was divided into four grade leagues: Biddy Hoops (kindergarten-through-first), Instructional (second-through-third), Junior (fourth-through-fifth) and Senior (sixth-through-ninth).
In the Biddy Hoops League, each youngster received a participation trophy.
In the Instructional League, Mercury, coached by Mark Lewis and Eric Fischer, went undefeated and won the regular season title. In the league’s postseason tournament, however, the second-place Comets defeated the fourth-place Sparks in the championship game.
In the Junior League final, the third-place Lynx defeated the fourth-place Sparks to win the championship. Kendra Overstreet received the league’s Rookie of the Year award.
In the Senior League, the Suns defeated the Sparks to win the crown.
“This year everyone gave 110% and worked really well together,” said Hans Laroche, the club’s athletic director, who was impressed with the participation of the girls and their parents. “All the players are winners. It is great getting to know these families and we really appreciate their participation and support of all the players at the Boys & Girls Club.”
The Boys Basketball League at the Boys & Girls Club will begin taking registration in September. For more information on the boys’ league, call Susie Hird at (949) 494-2535, ext. 105.
