14U wins district title

The South Huntington Beach Girls Fastpitch Softball League 14-and-Under All-Star team qualified for the Amateur Softball Assn. state tournament by winning the SoCal ASA Central District tournament in Laguna Niguel last weekend.

By winning the district title, South Huntington Beach has now won four consecutive tournaments, a stretch in which the squad posted a 17-1.

The South Huntington Beach 14U All-Stars are Amber Bronsard, Stephanie Coyne, Lauren Czerniachowski, Victoria Galasso, Kathryn Hermann, Avery Ingram, Amanda Kachevas, Alexandra Kanemaru, Shannon Nye, Megan Romero, Chelsea Roy and Rachel Vitali.

The team is coached by Kurtis Kanemaru, Mike Romero, Lou Bronsard, Doug Kachevus and Mike Coyne.

Following are highlights:

ASA Central District Tourney

South Huntington Beach proceeded through the winner’s bracket by defeating North Huntington Beach (5-2), Los Alamitos (3-1) and Cypress (15-5). In the final, South Huntington Beach dropped a close one to Los Alamitos, 2-4, but then came back in the rematch to best Los Al, 9-5.

Laguna Niguel SeaCountry Classic

South Huntington Beach scored victories over Oceanside (14-0) and Escondido (5-4) in pool play. In bracket play, it defeated Oceanside and then had to defeat host Laguna Niguel in a tiebreaker, 6-5.

In the final, the team rallied for a 4-2 victory over Poway.

Los Alamitos District Warm-Up Tournament

South Huntington Beach claimed the title by coming from behind to edge Cypress, 5-4. In pool play, the locals defeated the Los Alamitos Red squad (8-5) and Santee (11-7). In bracket play, they dominated both West Garden Grove (15-0) and Santee (15-1).

Rancho Trabuco Roundup

Last-inning heroics allowed South Huntington Beach to post victories over Mission Viejo (8-5) and host Rancho Trabuco (5-3) in pool play, and score a 7-6 victory over Mission Viejo in a game that was decided by a tiebreaker. Ironically, South Huntington cruised to a 14-0 victory over Cypress in the final.

In other softball action:

The Surf City Bombers, a girls’ 8-and-Under Silver All-Star team from Huntington Beach, won its second tournament title in as many outings by claiming the Placentia/Yorba Linda crown last weekend.

The Bombers went 4-0-1 en route to winning the championship.

In the championship game, the Bombers scored five runs in the first inning and then had to hold on in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Yorba Linda, 10-9, to win the championship.

Indiana pitched all six innings, striking out 11.

Felicia Rios singled and Ally Villa hit a three-run triple in the opening inning. Tamara McGuff had a two-run bunt in the second and hits by Timre Tonti and Villa in the sixth inning led to two more runs.

Yorba Linda trailed 10-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth but scored five runs on a two-out rally before Hanna Gergen made a huge catch at first base to end the game.

Indiana Boes struck out 11 in six innings. For the tournament, Boes struck out 43 in 21 1/2 innings.
