ALL-OCL BASEBALL

The Costa Mesa High and Estancia baseball teams each had two players make the first-team Orange Coast League, announced by league coaches.

For the Mustangs, seniors John Rybarczyk and Matt Pisarski were honored, and seniors Trevor McDonald and Tim Morley for the Eagles.

Rybarczyk and Pisarski were instrumental in helping Costa Mesa (15-12) reach the postseason for the first time since 2001 by making the wild-card game of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs. The Mustangs finished second at 6-6 in the new, four-team league.

Rybarczyk, a designated hitter headed to Vanguard, led Costa Mesa with nine home runs, 28 RBIs, a .840 slugging percentage, and was second on the team with a .373 batting average. Pisarski, a catcher, led the team with eight doubles, and batted .326 with 19 RBIs, one home run and two triples.

McDonald, a catcher, and Morley, a left fielder, were part of an Estancia squad beating cross-town rival Costa Mesa three out of four times and winning the Paul Troxel Trophy for the first time since 2001.

McDonald was second on the team in batting (.395) and first in doubles (10). Morley ranked third in average (.354) and second in RBIs (22).

Second-team selections from Costa Mesa included senior pitcher Garrick Williams (4-6, 55 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings), sophomore shortstop Miguel Molina (.316, four doubles) and junior outfielder Gabe Sanchez (.359, 21 RBIs, three home runs).

Senior infielder Blake Pinto (.416, 10 RBIs, 17 stolen bases) and junior second baseman Eddie Tomasek (.330, 15 RBIs) made the second team for Estancia (9-18, 3-9 in league).

ALL-ACADEMY BASEBALL

Four Sage Hill School baseball players received second-team All-Academy League honors from league coaches.

Seniors Doug McAfee and Danny Hurst, as well as juniors JJ Beruldsen and Travis Duncan were recognized after leading the Lightning (9-12, 7-8 in league) throughout.

McAfee went 2-3 with a 3.05 earned-run average. He hit .353 with 17 RBIs and two home runs.

Hurst went 1-2 with a 4.21 ERA.

Beruldsen’s .412 average, 22 RBIs, and three triples led the team. He hit two home runs, tying him with two teammates for the lead.

Duncan batted .353 with 13 RBIs and seven doubles.

ALL-ACADEMY SOFTBALL

Sage Hill School’s Lauren Neale and Katie McKeon were selected to the first-team All-Academy League and Julia Cappelli was named the Coach of the Year by league softball coaches.

Neale, a pitcher, went 9-12 and batted .428 as a senior, while McKeon, a junior shortstop, hit .498 and made her second straight first team.

Cappelli, in her first year, guided the Lightning (6-11, 4-4 third place in league) to the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division VI playoffs.

Freshman catcher Sadie Hoeschen made the second team, leading the Lightning with a .506 average.

Sophomore Morgan Hembarsky and freshman Lily Bush were honorable mentions.

ALL-SUNSET SOFTBALL

Newport Harbor High’s Jane Messersmith and Kristin Bassler were named to the first-team All-Sunset League by league softball coaches.

Messersmith, a junior pitcher, led the Sailors (3-26, 1-9 in league) with a 3.20 earned-run average and struck out 121 batters in 113 2/3 innings.

She also led the team with a .413 batting average, seven home runs, 13 RBIs, three doubles and 10 stolen bases.

Bassler, a junior outfielder, hit .333 with seven RBIs, and she homered, tripled and doubled once.

She was seven for seven in stolen bases.

Senior infielder Casey Lucas received second-team honors after batting .295 with eight stolen bases.
