BASEBALL:Duo lands top honors
Greg Davis and Kurt Heyer, two key components of Edison High’s pitching staff this year, have gained top honors on the 2007 All-Sunset League baseball team.
Davis, a senior who will play at UC Santa Barbara next year, has been named the league’s Pitcher of the Year. He compiled a 6-1 record and a 1.30 ERA.
Heyer, a sophomore, was tabbed the Rookie of the Year. His record was 5-1 with a 1.60 ERA.
The Chargers’ Steve Lambright was selected league Coach of the Year, a year in which Edison shared the Sunset League championship with Los Alamitos.
“The efforts of Greg and Kurt this year were huge in our success,” Lambright said. “We weren’t expected to be up there in league and those two guys had a lot to do with us getting to the top.
“As for coach of the year, it’s nice to get recognized by the other league coaches but this season was a team effort. I just run the ship. Our kids were the ones getting the job done.”
Six other Edison players — Kyle Higashioka, Justin DeMarco, Billy Silvestri, Michael Kuehn, Brent Meschuk and Ryan Sheeks, also were named all-league.
Marina pitcher Mark Trentacosta, a junior, and catcher Vinny Ponce, a freshman, also made the team.
Ponce was the only freshman named to the squad.
