CITYSCAPE ROUNDUP:5 arrested at DUI checkpoint

Huntington Beach authorities saw more than 1,600 vehicles during the city’s sobriety checkpoint from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Of those, 325 were stopped and five drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Nine citations were also issued for driving without a license and police seized seven cars, authorities said.

Elderly woman killed after crossing street

An 81-year-old Huntington Beach woman was killed Friday while crossing Brookhurst Street south of Adams Avenue about 8:15 p.m.

Huntington Beach police said more than one resident called to report a man was lying on the ground and after responding, realized it was a woman.

Authorities said paramedics from the Huntington Beach Fire Department responded and determined the victim, Joan Van Amersfooth of Huntington Beach, was dead.

A preliminary investigation indicated a motorist was traveling north on Brookhurst and hit Van Amersfooth near the intersection of Brookhurst and Meredith Drive while she was crossing the street.

Van Amersfooth fell to the ground where she was hit by a second driver, who, after getting out of her car, realized she’d struck a woman and called the police immediately, police said.

The driver who initially hit Van Amersfooth left the scene but returned and was interviewed by the police, authorities said.

Alcohol was not suspected as a factor in the collision, police said. The names of the drivers are being withheld because the investigation is ongoing, police said.

City to enforce firework laws more strictly in July

Huntington Beach authorities have announced they are enforcing fireworks laws more strictly than ever this Fourth of July. It is illegal to own, possess, sell, use or manufacture fireworks anywhere in the city. This includes all kinds of fireworks, even those purchased outside of the city or over the Internet, as well as fireworks labeled “safe and sane,” according to a city news release.

This year, civil citation fines have been raised to $500 for a first offense and $1,000 for additional offenses. Anyone who witnesses the use or possession of illegal fireworks should call police at (714) 960-8825.

Huntington Beach Pier swim signups end today

Residents interested in taking part in the 57th annual official city swim around Huntington Beach Pier June 16 must sign up by the end of today. Applicants can go to the community services department on the fifth floor of City Hall, 2000 Main St.; cost is $17 with a T-shirt, $13 without.

Late signups can pay $15 from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. the day of the swim, which begins at 9 a.m.

Amateur Radio Field Day set at H.B. Hospital

Huntington Beach Hospital is announcing its sixth annual Amateur Radio Field Day, in which unpaid volunteers from the Hospital Disaster Services Communication System will camp out overnight and hold emergency preparedness exercises.

Amateur radio operators will camp out on hospital grounds June 23 to 24, putting up emergency tents and antennas.

They will earn extra points in the friendly competition for use of home-built equipment, more than one mode of communication, and emergency power sources. One tent will be set aside for Boy Scouts, who will put up a platform for an emergency antenna.
