Sea Kings’ Mang named to
state coaches Hall of Fame
Corona del Mar High boys’ tennis coach Tim Mang has been selected to the California Coaches Assn. Hall of Fame.
Mang, who was also the 2006 National High School Tennis Coach of the Year, has coached the Sea Kings for 13 years. In that time, CdM has won three CIF Southern Section championships and 10 league titles.
He has coached a Southern Section singles champion — Taylor Dent in 1996 — and three section doubles champions, including Brian Morton and Garrett Snyder in 2001, Snyder and Carsten Ball in ’02 and Dustin Hladek and Fabian Matthews last season.
Mang also coached the CdM girls for four seasons, including the 1997 CIF championship team.
Previously, he was the boys’ tennis coach at Edison High from 1972-88. While there, he guided the Chargers to nine league championships.
Mang also created the National High School Tennis All-American tournament, which began in 2000 and is considered the best high school tournament in the United States.
He led CdM to victory in the tournament for three consecutive years, from 2003-05.
This year, he also helped organize a National Championship, featuring the winners of his tournament (the West regional) and the newly created Midwest, South and East regional.
Mang will be presented with the honor on June 16 at the Hilton Irvine/Orange County Airport hotel.
