High school band fundraiser May 18

The Laguna Beach High School Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Roger Shew, will be playing at the annual “Dining and Dancing Under the Stars” fundraiser and silent auction on May 18 at Tivoli Terrace. The event benefits the Music Department.

In their first performance at the Riverside College Jazz Festival last year, the school’s Jazz Orchestra won their division, and the orchestra’s rhythm section was recognized as a top performer among the 20 bands competing at the festival.

They are recording their second CD in June; their first CD will be available at for purchase at this year’s event.

The performance will include a variety of music including swing, bossa nova, funk and rock. It will showcase individual student talent and group professionalism.

Last year’s silent auction included tennis lessons, round trip tickets to Hawaii with accommodations, a variety of original artwork and a personal musical composition, all donated by local business owners and music supporters.

College students awarded scholarships

Five Laguna College of Art & Design students were honored with $500 scholarships from the Peter and Masha Plotkin Memorial Foundation on April 22.

The award reception was held at the Plotkin Memorial Foundation Gallery in Lake Forest.

The Fine Arts Drawing & Painting program students honored were sophomore James Miller; junior Russell Becker; junior Nicholas Enevoldsen; junior Michael Harnish; and senior Sarah Miska.

Lifelong Fitness Fair approaches

The second annual Lifelong Fitness Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 19 at El Morro Elementary School.

The free event will feature games, classes, performances, prizes, food, goodie bags and more.

Imagination Celebration

Laguna Art Museum will host a variety of children’s hands-on art classes and events from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, in conjunction with the 2007 countywide Imagination Celebration. It is free to children and their parents.

Activities will include Design-a-Zine (kids will be able to tell stories about themselves in words and pictures), Zip Zap Mr. Potato Head (kids can replicate their face using Magic Nuudles and other building materials), Home Depot (an architectural project), Face Travel (kids make rockets with their photographs on them), Make A Face (mask making with various materials), Face Painting, and Art Detective (find works of art in the galleries using a series of clues).

Events include performances by The Laguna Beach School Honors Choir, the Music to Grow on Recorder and Song Flute group, and the Gallimaufry Performing Arts troupe.

College offers filmmaking class

Laguna College of Art & Design is adding a filmmaking course to its summer community education offerings.

Participants will have the opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art Apple lab while creating their own short film.

The course offers the opportunity to become an Apple Pro with a certificate in Final Cut Pro — Level One.

The course is designed for media artists to tell their stories through digital production, and will cover all aspects of production from script to screen.

The goal of the course will be for each student to create a short movie and prepare it for digital distribution and festivals. ROP and college credit is available.

Instructor Wendy Milette is a graduate of the USC School of Cinematic Arts, with a B.A. in Critical Studies and an M.F.A. in Production. She is also a certified Apple Pro.

Wendy is also the Director of the My Hero Short Film Festival, and all films created with a hero theme will be eligible for festival competition and global distribution.

The class will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, from June 25 to July 15, with no class on July 4.

It will be held in Studio 3 at the college, 2222 Laguna Canyon Road, and is $1,605.
