Cards take tight one from the A’s

Jake Rubino pitched a complete game with six strikeouts as the Cardinals edged the A’s in a defensive battle, 1-0, in Majors Division action at Ocean View Little League.

Rubino, Josh Said and Arthur Martinez all singled and Dominic Fabbri doubled to account for the Cardinals’ offense.

Max Gibbs pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed one unearned run with eight strikeouts for the A’s. Grant Mayeaux finished the game and struck out three.

Gibbs also tripled and Matt Stanford, Kevin Engesser and Robert Cornwell all singled.

In other Majors Division action:

Angels 3, A’s 2

Patrick Shearer threw four scoreless, hitless innings and struck out 10 to lead the Angels past the A’s.

Robert Cornwell had the lone hit and drove in a run for the A’s, whose other run came when Kevin Engesser scored on a sacrifice fly by Grant Mayeaux.

The usually steady A’s pitching staff gave up seven walks.
