Suspect admits he trespassed

An Anaheim man pleaded guilty Monday to charges of aggravated trespassing of a dwelling and resisting arrest after breaking into a Costa Mesa home and terrifying a couple who were asleep in bed, authorities said.

The couple awoke in the early morning hours Sunday to find Nathan Todd, 18, hovering over them, police said. The husband yelled for Todd to “get out” but moments later found him lounging on the living room couch, Costa Mesa police Sgt. Bob Ciszek said. After telling Todd to leave once more, the homeowner called police just before 4 a.m., Ciszek said. Todd left the home on the 300 block of Magnolia Street and headed east toward Irvine Avenue.

Police found Todd in the passenger seat of an unlocked car further down the street and attempted to take him into custody. Todd exited the vehicle and ran, heading east again, Sgt. Matt Grimmond said.

Officers chased him on foot and caught Todd as he unsuccessfully attempted to scale a fence. Todd was most likely intoxicated at the time of his arrest, police said. Sentenced to time already served, he paid $100 mandatory restitution fee and was released from custody Monday afternoon, officials said.

Even though police consider this an isolated event, they encourage residents to make sure all doors are locked at night.
