INTERSCHOLASTIC HOCKEY FEDERATION CHAMPIONS:Monahan, Olinger lead Harbor to title
IRVINE — Cameron Monahan and Brett Olinger had two goals and two assists each to lead the Newport Harbor High junior varsity roller hockey team to the Interscholastic Hockey Federation championship with a 7-4 win over Laguna Hills at the 949 Roller Hockey Center in Irvine Wednesday.
With the victory, Newport Harbor exacted revenge. Last month, the Sailors lost to Laguna Hills, 7-4.
Ryan Iverson added one goal and three assists for the Sailors (16-2-1). Newport Harbor broke away from a 3-3 tie after the first period. Joey Grocki scored a goal and had an assist and Chrisity Jenkins also scored for Harbor.
Newport goalie Richard De St. Jean recorded 23 saves. Peter Do, Josh Jobse and Dusty Campbell also contributed for the Sailors, who matched Laguna Hills for shots on goal, 27.
In the semifinals, Newport Harbor broke away from a 4-4 first-period tie to beat Huntington Beach, 11-6 on April 18. Monahan scored eight goals and produced two assists.
Grocki scored two goals for Newport Harbor, which also received a goal from Campbell.
The Sailors were effective on the power play, converting four of eight chances. De St. Jean stopped 22 shots.
