Triathlon’s return triumphant
NEWPORT BEACH — Chris Foster of Venice topped the men’s field by nearly two minutes and Maura Treaccar of La Jolla was almost five minutes faster than her closest women’s competitor to win their respective overall titles at the 29th Newport Beach Triathlon, completed Sunday.
Foster, 24, completed the half-mile swim, 15-mile bike course and three-mile run in one hour, four minutes, 28 seconds, ahead of runner-up Peter Borak of Menlo Park (1:06.20).
Treaccar, 20, finished in 1:15.16, well ahead of women’s runner-up Amy Aukstikalnis of Santa Monica (1:20.08).
David Light, 38, of Costa Mesa, finished third overall with a time of 1:08.01. He was the top finisher among Newport-Mesa competitors.
Race Director Jack Carress said the race, which included close to 800 competitors, went off with out a hitch. The swim start took place at Newport Dunes and Carress said there were no rescues performed in the swim stage.
Carress also said there was not a single crash on the bike stage, which he noted was unusual.
“It couldn’t have gone better,” said Carress, president of Pacific Sports LLC which along with Kring & Chung was an event host. “I’ve put on about 200 triathlons and this one was one of the smoothest.”
The race was held for 28 years, before being interrupted in 2006 when Newport Beach City staff, and then the City Council, rejected requests for the necessary permits. City officials expressed concerns about traffic control, and other issues.
An outcry from the Southern California triathlon community, as well as an altered course, helped the race return this year and Carress said the plan is to continue next year, using the same course as this year’s event.
The top three finishers in all age divisions received medals and the overall winners received prizes including a wrist computer, a gift certificate to a local restaurant and swimwear.
