Donald Franklin Barker
(88) of Newport Beach, passed away peacefully at home February 24, 2007, after sustaining an accident at his home in early December. Don was born in Chicago, Ill, December 18, 1918. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Mary Ann, and their 3 sons: Glenn (Christine), Sandy, Ut; Gary (Joy), Irvine; and Richard (Diane), Ketchum, Id; and 3 loving grandchildren: Meghan, Galen and Micah.
Don met Mary Ann Blevins, a local gal from Lexington, while both attended the University of Kentucky. His education was interrupted by a brief stint in the Navy until the end of WWII, graduating with an engineering degree, class of ’46. He was employed by Douglas Aircraft Company in Santa Monica and remained with them his entire career.
He and Mary Ann were avid golfers and bridge players at Newport Beach CC. Through these activities, they developed a circle of loyal friends that supported them through his final months. His witty sense of humor always made up for an errant golf shot or “poor cards”.
A memorial service will be held at St Andrews Presbyterian Chapel, March 2 at 11:00 AM. A gathering of friends will occur at the Newport Beach Yacht club on Bayside Dr. following the service.
